When the Story in Our Head Is Not the Full Story
As I was preparing for my daughter’s birthday a few weeks ago, I felt down because I thought I wasn’t doing enough with her. I was really feeling horrible and told myself 12 months have gone by and I haven’t done a thing. What type of year did I provide for her? I really went down the rabbit hole and felt like a terrible mother. Then I began to look at pictures from the day she was born to moments from that week.
There were lots of pictures, even from this year. And I realized that what I just thought of myself wasn’t true. There was evidence of time spent, memories made, and moments shared. What I believed to be true did not match reality.
It reminded me how easily we can create a version of events in our minds that does not actually exist.
When Criticism Drowns Out Gratitude
Sometimes we are so busy measuring ourselves that we miss what is right in front of us. We beat ourselves up for reasons that are not anchored in truth. We overlook moments of gratitude because we are being overly critical.
We run with a lie and miss the opportunity to be present. And to be thankful.
And the cost of that is not just emotional. It steals our joy. It keeps us from honoring what God is already doing.
What This Year Taught Me
This year has been one of growth. From changes I have made to be a healthier version of myself to the inner work of character development. I have learned and been reminded of A LOT! Here are some mindset shifts that have helped me remain disciplined and consistent in the good works God has created for me to walk in:
-
- Good enough is okay
- It’s okay to make a mistake
- I have to steward my time well
- No is a complete sentence
- Focus on pleasing God, not people
- The things of God are done with God
- Small steps every day
It Is Okay to Begin Again
My biggest takeaway this year is simple but so freeing.
It is okay to begin again.
Not because I failed, but because growth requires humility. Because obedience often looks like recalibrating. Because God is patient with our process.
Looking ahead to 2026, I can say that things are already different. I am different. And I give God all the glory for that.
Something to Consider
As you prepare for what is next, be realistic with your time. Be clear about where you are headed, without dismissing how far you have come. Reflect without holding on to the past. Believe what God says and stay positioned in Him.
If it is the Lord’s will, I will be back with a new post in 2026.
The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace. -Number 6:24-26
