Exodus 18:13–27

There will be days as a leader when you simply don’t feel like doing the work in front of you. The calling God has given us does not pause when our energy or motivation fades. That’s why focus matters. Staying centered on what God has called us to do helps us keep going.

One of the biggest hindrances to that focus is trying to do it all ourselves. Feeling like “I’m the only one who can do this” can quietly drain the very strength we need to carry out the work God has given us. The truth is, we were never designed to work alone.

In Exodus 18, Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, visits him and observes his leadership. From morning until evening, Moses listens to and judges the people’s disputes (Exodus 18:13). Jethro sees what is going on and says:

“What you’re doing is not good,” Moses’ father-in-law said to him. 18“You will certainly wear out both yourself and these people who are with you, because the task is too heavy for you. You can’t do it alone. -Exodus 18:17–18 HCSB

Jethro then offers wise counsel:

Do what only you can do

Stand before God for the people. Bring the hard cases to Him

Exodus 18:19

Teach Others

Show them God’s ways and how to walk in them

Exodus 18:20

Select capable, godly helpers

Look for people who fear God, are truthful, and reject greed

Exodus 18:21

Delegate wisely

Share the work so that the burden is carried together

Exodus 18:22

Moses listened AND took action.

Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. -Exodus 18:24 HCSB

As we serve in our homes, at work, in ministry, and beyond, let’s consider how we can be better stewards of the assignments God has given to us. We don’t have to do everything on our own. Connect with people who can provide wise counsel and receive the help God is sending your way.

Reflect

Where in your leadership (home, work, ministry) are you carrying a burden alone that God intends for you to share?
